micampus has become an emblem of technological development within Wifirst
About micampus
micampus is one of the leading Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) operators in Spain, with a portfolio of premium residences spread across the country's main university cities. The group designs modern, well-located buildings where international and domestic students live, study and connect — and it has built its reputation on a relentless focus on resident experience, operational excellence and continuous innovation.
In a sector where digital connectivity is no longer a "nice-to-have" but a core part of the product itself, micampus made an early and strategic choice: to treat its network as critical infrastructure on par with electricity or hot water. Today, every device a resident plugs in — from a laptop and smartphone to a smart TV, gaming console or connected lock — depends on the same managed platform, operated end-to-end by Wifirst.

The Challenge
micampus wanted to unify the connectivity service across its different residence types and, in parallel, deploy new converged networks for both staff and students. The group was also looking to enable seamless integration with third-party services (laundry systems, smart door locks, building management, etc.) and needed a partner capable of building a unified ecosystem delivering a flawless network experience at scale.
The Solution
Wifirst designed and operates a fully managed dual network infrastructure (wired and wireless) with 5GHz coverage across all sites. The architecture was prepared from day one to natively support Chromecast in every room without requiring additional hardware. To deliver a true "home-away-from-home" experience, the Room Area Network solution was rolled out in every resident bedroom — giving each student their own private, secure WiFi "bubble" where their devices recognise each other and communicate seamlessly. Beyond connectivity, Wifirst proposed a converged network that significantly reduces the cost of deploying additional services such as wireless door locks, laundry systems and dedicated staff networks. The entire network is fully redundant to minimise the impact of potential incidents, and Wifirst monitors the full stack — including connectivity fibre links — 24/7. On selected sites, Wifirst also operates digital signage.
The Network in Numbers
Today, the micampus & Wifirst partnership operates one of the largest student connectivity infrastructures in Europe:
- 42 client sites under fully managed operation across Spain
- 2,600 access points deployed for ubiquitous WiFi 6 coverage
- 685 switches powering the wired backbone of every residence
- 40,000 connected devices on the network on average every month
- Peak internet traffic of 12 Gb/s, sustained during evening study and streaming hours
- More than 50% of traffic carried over Room Area Networks — confirming the strategic value of giving each resident a private, isolated WiFi environment
These figures illustrate not just the scale of the deployment, but the intensity of real-world usage: each resident connects multiple devices (laptops, smartphones, smart TVs, gaming consoles, IoT accessories), and the RAN architecture absorbs the bulk of this device-to-device traffic without burdening the internet uplink — a decisive advantage for both performance and bandwidth optimisation.
The Results
micampus has become an emblem of technological excellence within the Wifirst portfolio — both in its approach to integrating ever more services into a single converged network, and in the quality of operational reporting delivered to the client. WiFi 6 is now a reality in every micampus residence, alongside the Room Area Network (the private WiFi bubble that lets each student manage their own devices), digital signage, and convergence with chain-wide staff networks. Together, these elements make the micampus & Wifirst project one of the most advanced student connectivity references on the European market today — and several parallel initiatives are already in flight to further extend the platform with new services.
"Excellence in connectivity is now a requirement in the PBSA sector. Wifirst has been able to adapt to the exponential growth and quality standard of micampus. For us, having Wifirst as a technological partner is the best sign of professionalism and a key part of our technological expansion project"
